Danish Video Stirs OutrageBy Natalia Rachlin
A YouTube video of a beautiful young Danish mother, searching for her infant’s “baby daddy,” has caused a stir in the Danish travel industry.
In the video, the woman, who is seen holding a baby boy, talks about her drunken one-night-stand with the mysterious father, and adds: “I know that this is really a long shot, but if you are out there and you see this — or anybody else who can help me sees this — please contact me.”
But the video, which had been viewed millions of times, turned out to be a hoax, courtesy of Visit Denmark, the country’s tourism board. It was roundly condemned by politicians and citizens for its portrayal of Danish women as promiscuous, disrespect towards single-mothers and general tacky nature.
“National Tourist Agency sells Denmark with an emotional lie,” said a headline in one of Denmark’s biggest newspapers, Politiken.
The tourism board removed the video and issued an apology. “I am very sorry that the film hit such a nerve,” said Dorte Kiilerich, director of Visit Denmark, in a press release. “The goal was solely to bring about a positive awareness of Denmark.”
