As I’ll be gone for the rest of the week I’m posting a little early. I figure since I’ll be enjoying Texas, you guys should be too. The band wasn’t yet Wilco and wasn’t from Texas, but they recorded this wonderful alt-country album right in the heart of Austin. In honor of my 25th birthday I’m posting one of my favorite albums of the 70s. Iggy Pop’s 1977 masterful collaboration with David Bowie: The Idiot. Iggy Pop referred to it at the time as “a cross between James Brown and Kraftwerk.” I don’t know how accurate that is, but it’s still a great groove-heavy record with the best Iggy’s vocals ever sounded.

In honor of Trent Reznor winning A FUCKING OSCAR, thought it’d be nice to revisit his humble beginnings. So let’s get Industrial, shall we? The first King of Angst made this excellent record and influenced the likes of Marilyn Manson and just about every other future electronic musician in some way in my opinion. Matt Sharp, everyone’s favorite (and the only worthwhile) bassist for Weezer, started his own band after he left Weezer. Fuzzed-out bass, Phased-out keyboards and upbeat drums made this an adorably poppy record. Enjoy 1995’s Return of the Rentals.

Frank Black, one fo the main creative driving forces behind The Pixies, had plenty of songs for their next album. Problem was, there wouldn’t be another Pixies album. Lucky for us, we got 1994’s Teenager of the Year.

It’s freezing, but next week is looking warmer. Sobriety is killing me, but I’m feeling better and getting into shape. This February is chock-full of happenings and I need to look on the bright side. Thank God for reissues to remind you how good albums are. Ride was an English band that existed in the shoegaze circuit, but had too much interest in melody to stick around there for long. Their music exists somewhere between My Bloody Valentine, The Stone Roses and Oasis (Andy Bell of Ride would later play bass for Oasis.) Here’s Ride’s EXTREMELY listenable 1990 album, Nowhere.
